There are many volunteer opportunities around Kansas City, and each comes with their own considerations for you to make. Volunteering is a big commitment, and you will want to make sure that the time and services you offer up are used wisely and effectively.

Here are some things for you to think about and consider:

  • Find a charity that matches your interests. Not only will this help keep you motivated, but it’s also likely you’ll have skills and knowledge they can utilize.
  • Examine the programs they are offering. Review their mission, goals, accomplishments, and reputation.
  • Take a look at the fiscal health and reputation carefully. Often these can indicate problems attracting quality volunteers and donors. You might be up for the challenge of turning a poor performer around, but know what you’re getting into before you sign on the dotted line.

Finally, when you have carefully chosen the charity/organization you want to volunteer with, make a commitment. Not just to yourself, but to your community, as well. You’ll be glad you did, and it will open doors you’ve never imagined.

Sack It for Santa: Holiday Giving for Teens in Kansas City

Sack it for SantaDuring the holiday season in Kansas City, we have many opportunities to give back and create a miracle in someone’s life, but teens are often overlooked in gift-giving programs. Help us make a difference in a local 13-18-year-old’s life with our Sack it for Santa holiday collection program.

Ready to start giving? Here’s what you need to do:

  • Head to your local CVS or to Seasonal Concepts in Overland Park, where you can find Sack it for Santa gift bags.
  • Each bag has suggestions and instructions to help you fill it up. You might want to put in a throw or blanket, hoodies, lounge pants, makeup and journals for girls, or cologne and aftershave for boys.
  • Return your bag to CVS by 5 p.m. on Dec. 9.

In addition, you can text “SANTA” to 816-545-9233, use PayPal or pull up the Love Fund’s mobile site to donate $30, and Love Fund elves will create a bag for you. Another easy way you can help is to bring your teen shopping at your local Plato’s Closet, and donate as little as $1 at checkout to support the gift bag donations through Teens Helping Teens.
